World Academy of Artificial Consciousness

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Christof Koch, internationally renowned neuroscientist and computational neuroscientist, and Meritorious Investigator at the Allen Institute for Brain Science, has been elected to the World Academy for Artificial Consciousness (WAAC) as an Academician, in recognition of his foundational contributions to the neural correlates of consciousness (NCC), the mechanisms of visual perception and attention, and computational/theoretical neuroscience spanning “from neurons to networks,” as well as his long-standing advocacy for open, collaborative, cross-disciplinary dialogue at the intersection of brain science and artificial intelligence.

Dr. Koch has devoted his career to transforming the “mystery of consciousness” from a primarily philosophical question into a rigorous scientific program that can be progressively approached through experiments and models. Beginning in the 1990s and 2000s, he worked—together with Francis Crick and others—to articulate and systematically advance the NCC research framework, emphasizing testable neural mechanisms and helping steer consciousness research toward a cumulative empirical science. His scholarly trajectory bridges visual perception and attention, biophysically grounded neural computation and modeling, and the measurement of conscious states, while extending the discussion to the scientific and methodological boundaries of whether rapidly evolving intelligent systems could, in principle, possess subjective experience. Beyond his technical research, he has actively engaged broader audiences through influential books including The Quest for Consciousness: A Neurobiological Approach and Consciousness: Confessions of a Romantic Reductionist, helping expand public discourse on the future of consciousness and intelligence. He has also received wide professional recognition, including election as an AAAS Fellow (2014), selection as an inaugural Allen Distinguished Investigator (2010), and honors listed by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences such as the NSF Young Investigator Award and the Alexander von Humboldt Prize.

Academicians of the World Academy for Artificial Consciousness hail from institutions such as Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Cambridge, the University of California, the French Academy of Sciences, the University of Padua, the University of Queensland, Columbia University, and the University of Exeter. Honorary Academicians come from a wide range of countries and regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Canada, Australia, Spain, and China. In addition, leading scientists from prominent research institutes and technology companies—such as Google, the Allen Institute for Brain Science, and ZEEKR—also participate.

Its mission is to advance frontier research and international collaboration in artificial consciousness through the integration of science, technology, and philosophy.
