Leadership and Success
Most reader of ScienceNet probably never heard of the Sequoia Capital Investment company and Sir Micheal Moritz (its Chairman). Sequoia is the most successful Silicon Valley venture capital company having invested in Apple, Google, Oracle, PayPal, Stripe, YouTube, Instagram, Yahoo! Among others and Moritz is a British college graduate majoring in history and one time newspaper reporter. I listen to an interview of Mortiz last night and came away with the following “takeaway”
1. At least in the West, it matters very little what you studied in college. (Note another more familiar example is Andrea Jung who was an English literature major in college https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrea_Jung, http://blog.sciencenet.cn/blog-1565-11432.html )
2. Having a vision (compass) helps amid uncertain and incomplete information for decision making
3. be willing to learn from mistakes
4. Never ease up even though you are at the top
5. There are great futures for many Chinese tech companies because they learn from the West.
