There are seven national holidays observed by all 50 States in the US: New Year Day, Memorial Day (軍人纪念節), Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day,Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day (note 1). Each holiday has its own tradition. For Memorial Day, the tradition is a free national concert held in Washington DC on open grounds with TV broadcast to the entire nation and to all US military installations over the World. Its main purpose is to remember and honor the fallen US soldiers in all wars. The concert is elaborately produced featuring many celebrities telling emotionally stirring stories of heroism of the common soldiers. Well known patriotic songs are sung and staged. It is one time when differences are forgotten and forgiven, the whole nation come together under one banner and one purpose. For immigrants, I watch this broadcast every year and must say that I experience an emotional high and gratitude for having lived continuously in the US as an immigrant and citizen since I was 16 years old in 1950. My knowledge about Chinese national holidays are somewhat incomplete. I know there are CCTV new year celebration broadcast similar to the memorial day concert described above. But are there days specifically devoted to honor the military forces?
(note 1. According to Wikipedia other holidays not uniformly observed by all States are: Martin Luther King Day (in January), President’sday (in February), Columbus Day (in October) and the Day after Thanksgiving (in November).
