1789年爆发的法国大革命，废除了全部封建制度，发布了《人权宣言》。人权和自由平等的面制度基本原则一经确立，就意味着封建贵族的王权将被永远废除。法国大革命引起了欧洲邻国封建统治者的不安和敌视，他们企图以武装干涉扼杀法国的资产阶级革命。奥地利和普鲁士联合发表宣言，要求法国恢复国王的权力。法国逃亡贵族在国外招募军队准备复辟，瑞典、俄国、西班牙、撒丁王国都表示支持。1792年4月20日，法国对奥宣战。普鲁士奥地利联军攻人法国；并且发出威胁，如果法国国王和王室受到侵犯，就要对巴黎进行“军事惩罚并全部毁灭，处死暴徒以惩其罪行”。这个宣言激怒了法国各地的革命力量.法国最南端城市马赛，迅速组织起一支500人的结盟军向巴黎进发。1792年4月25日，鲁日·德·里勒在斯特拉斯堡创作《马赛曲》。

在法国历史上，《马赛曲》几经浮沉，曾数次遭到帝国的禁令。1795年，《马赛曲》被定为法国国歌。但在1834年的政治审判中，《马赛曲》却被保皇党诬蔑为“煽动暴乱”的歌曲。1848年，《马赛曲》开始在欧洲传播，而在它的祖国，第二帝国再次宣布它为“煽动颠覆”的歌曲。但是，拿破仑三世曾一度在普法战争时允许唱《马赛曲》。《马赛曲》最终于1879年再次被恢复为国歌，并一直延续至今。1880年，法国政府规定学校必须教唱《马赛曲》。
