[Knowledge Sharing] Guideline 5: Classifying and Reporting Mediation Results

Guideline 5: Classifying and Reporting Mediation Results

Researchers should classify and report the result for each mediation hypothesis using evidence from the indirect and direct effects. Following Zhao et al. (2010), the five classifications are complementary, competitive, indirect-only, direct-only, and no-effect. Direct-only and no-effect represent nonmediation outcomes. Researchers should report effect estimates and inferential evidence alongside each classification rather than relying solely on “partial” or “full” mediation labels. In this guideline, c denotes the direct effect after accounting for the mediator. Nonsignificance should not be interpreted as proof that an effect equals zero.

1. Use the five mediation-type classification: direct-only, no-effect,   indirect-only, complementary, competitive.

1. Use partial or full without specifying which mediation type   applies.

2. Classify mediation by evaluating a×b and c, and report mediation   type for every mediation hypothesis.

2. Incomplete or overstated mediation inferences.
