About the role:
The Associate Publisher is responsible for the maintenance and development of a list of wide scope, multidisciplinary open access journals, with a strong focus on the China market. The Associate Publisher will continuously and proactively evaluate the performance of the program as it relates to Wiley and department objectives.
The Associate Publisher should:
• Have a good understanding of open access publishing, publication at scale and the application of different editorial models.
• Work across internal and external stakeholders to meet and exceed objectives with regard to content growth, including submissions, acceptances and published articles.
• Be expected to present journal development performance and strategic plans to editors and to negotiate with partners and drive the right behaviors.
• Understand industry trends, how they related to Wiley and the portfolio and is able to communicate the potential implications and opportunities to stakeholders.
• Have a strong awareness of the research publishing environment in China, including subject area growth trends and key institutions.
• Know how to build and communicate a business case to gain support and resource/investment for publishing development ideas.
• Manage editor performance independently and meets with journal Editors to review and report performance based on the needs of the portfolio.
• Develop a deep network of contacts among Chinese researchers and engages on a consistent basis to gain insight and ideas, and seize on opportunities that may present a competitive advantage.
• Be expected to organize, maintain, and report on activities to the Associate Director and Senior Director in a timely manner.
How you will make an impact:
Develop subject area to grow submissions and published output
• Works on a complex, high value/high potential list of multidisciplinary open access journals
• Creates and implements plans and activities identified in the annual journal development planning cycle.
• Develops new commercial opportunities for Wiley especially in Open Access field
Drive OA publishing at scale
• Proactively manages performance of external journal editors
• Identifies opportunities to drive growth by optimizing the current editorial model
• Collaborates closely with Publishing Solutions and Performance team to implement initiatives that drive efficiency and productivity.
Build and nurture internal and external partner relationships
• Builds relationships in a publishing context. Independently expand network of external EiCs/Editorial boards based on the needs of journal development, including complex relationships, e.g. societies.
• Explains and communicates complex issues in research and research publishing in an insightful manner
• Delivers webinars, talks and workshops aimed to drive engagement and submissions
What we look for:
•Bachelor's degree and above, PhD would be ideal
•3+ years' experience in publishing industry
•Have knowledge of the China research publishing market, for example growth trends, competitors and key research institutions
•High degree of awareness of trends in publishing, able to use experience and judgement to maximize potential in own program
•Excellent communication skills, able to build relationships with external stakeholders in a publishing context
•Managed and worked on a complex, wide scope, multi-disciplinary open access journal is a plus
•Business level fluency in English; native Chinese speaker
