 Comment on Gulliver's Travels

                                                        —— By WangLei

The text is presented as a first-person narrative by the supposed author, it makes the story seems more real, and brings readers to the special context and let readers experience happiness or sadness together with Gulliver, share same feeling with him.and the name "Gulliver" appears nowhere in the book other than the title page. The unabridged publications of the text begin with a fictional letter entitled "The Publisher to the Reader" and "A letter from Captain Gulliver to his cousin Sympson" which present the fact that the original account has been edited and published without the permission of Gulliver.

Connections and contrasts could be found easily as story progerssed. Gulliver's attitude hardens as the book progresses — he is genuinely surprised by the viciousness and politicking of the Lilliputians but finds the behaviour of the Yahoos in the fourth part reflective of the behaviour of people. Each part is the reverse of the preceding part.In these four definately different countries,Gulliver plays a role who is big/small/wise/ignorant, the countries are complex/simple/scientific/natural, forms of Government are worse/better/worse/better than England's. Gulliver's view between parts contrasts with its other coinciding part — Gulliver sees the tiny Lilliputians as being vicious and unscrupulous, and then the king of Brobdingnag sees Europe in exactly the same light. Gulliver sees the Laputians as unreasonable, and Gulliver's Houyhnhnm master sees humanity as equally so.

Satirical allusions to British society and government is the most special characteristic of the book. When Gulliver woke up in the area of Liliput,he found”he was bound to the ground”,he struggled, but Lilliputains attacked him”as we do bombs in Europe” One day, The King told Gulliver he would “show something special”,then he saw “some of the Liliputians practiced a very intresting sports. In this sport, some men would dance ang jump on a rope that was tied high in the airbetween two trees. They had practiced this skill from a very young age, so they did not fall very often.”Later, Gulliver “learned that this sport was not just a game.It was used to choose important men to work for the King.” The King believed that the man who could jump the highest and dance the best would be a good leader, then that man would be given a high position. These vivid description alludes to the darkness and absurdity of English government in a dramastic way.

Conclusion:He who face the ruthlessnes without fear is a warrior indeed.Gulliver is the incarnation of Jonathan Swift to a large degree, his courage, stubborn and determination are the most precious records he left for us and let the book ——Gulliver's Travels a more valueable one.
