I had always said no to translation, but accepted a request last month to translate a research paper. (Hey, one can always use some extra cash for Coach handbags.)
The mistake I made was over-estimating the amount of time I could commit. It was the busiest two weeks with many visitors. I knew I was in trouble by Day 9 (when I said I would finish it in 10 days). Then, my Mac crashed.
Luckily, my client was very understanding, and told me not to rush. It actually took me another two weeks to finish the translation (about 95% done now; the rest needs more info). I think the most difficut part is the introduction, because I cannot understand some Chinese writing (and therefore need to read original papers).
On the other hand, I should be happy that I did the translation at all, because during that time span I took a mini vacation to the Big Island, had many days/evenings off (to go shopping and to dinner parties). And, I also edited 10 research papers. I will be happy to take the rest of the month off (except I know seven papers are on their way, with a deadline for a special journal issue).
So, Mac, please don't crash on me again.
