A college freshman wants to find a research opportunity this summer. He is willing to work for free, but that does not mean he is wanted because he has no experience.
The question is whether or not his mother should step in, say to contact a colleague who may need a pair of free hands. She sent her son some links of professors who do field work and wanted him to make the contact. Her friends, who are "native" and highly successful, argued that she should email some of her colleagues herself because "knowing someone" could make a difference. She disagreed, and her son became upset with her.
Finally, she caved in and started to email her colleagues, one at a time. In the mean time, her friend also stepped in and within days found a "match" for the young man. The mother is happy for her son, but she also wonders about other college freshmen who may not be as lucky...
