As a representative of Shanghai University, I am extraordinary honored that next conference will be held in our university four years later. I am going to say a few words to introduce our university and Shanghai City as well as the tentative plan of next ICDVC.
Founded in 1922, Shanghai University was merged, in May 1994, from four former institutions of higher education, namely, Shanghai University of Technology, Shanghai University of Science & Technology, Shanghai College of Science & Technology and the former Shanghai University.
The striking feature of Shanghai University is the president, perhaps the most senior university president in the world. Aged 98, he is a legendary figure belonging to the realm beyond the wildest imagine of common people.
There are more than 2700 faculty members, including more than 400 full professors and 800 associate professors. Various programs are offered.
There are more than 41000 full time students, including more than 8000 master and doctor students, and 2700 international students.
Shanghai University is seeking the excellence in research. During the past five years, Shanghai University ranks among the top 20 and top 30 universities in China with regard to the research funds and the number of research papers respectively. The number of applications for and granting of patents is among top 20 in China.
These photos show the garden like campus, somehow too beautiful as a university campus.
Now I turn to Shanghai. I’ll not talk too much about Shanghai, a municipality with more than 20 million populations, because the city itself speaks loudly. These photos show the modern aspect of Shanghai. However, I cannot show you the traditional aspect of Shanghai here. There is some serene countryside nearby, which I personally appreciate very much. The soul of the city, beyond the version, can be only felt by heart.
Finally, I turn to next ICDVC. The conference is scheduled in May 2014, the 20th anniversary of new Shanghai University.
The potential participators will receive the conference flyer in 2012, while our preparations will begin much earlier.
The structure and the procedure of the conference will be the same as those of ICDVC-2006 (Beijing) and ICDVC-2010 (Hangzhou).
Dear colleagues and friends. Hopefully, we’ll rejoin in Shanghai in 2014, two years after 2012. Even if the human being flees from the earth in 2012, the laws of dynamics will still govern the universe. The later species, on the earth or not, must study dynamics, vibration, and control as well.
On behalf of Prof. Zhe-Wei Zhou, the acting president of Shanghai University and the academic leader of its mechanics field, I promise that we try our best to host the conference successfully. We’ll take the opportunity as well as the responsibility.
Welcome to next ICDVC in Shanghai University! Thank you!
