This Sunday New York Times (4/17/2106) has featured an article with the  above title. Since NYT is blocked in China, I’ll give a short summary below.

The point of the article is that the map of 50 states of America is old fashioned. Economically and culturally, the US can be divided into seven Regions:

1.  The west coast called Cassidia which included Washington,  Oregon, and California

2.  The Northeastern States From Boston to Washington DC,  including New England, NY,NJ, PA, MD

3.  TheSoutheastern state from Washington D.C. down to Florida

4.  TheGreat Plain states

5.  The Inland western states

6.  The Gulf states

7.  TheGreat Lakes State

State sovereignty and rights actually sometimes impede progress.  Metropolitan cities such as New York are too big and too diverse to be under  the government of one state (many people live in New Jersey and work in New York city.  Their interests are regional). I suppose this is also the reason that   China has “directly administered cities”such as Beijing, Shanghai, and ChongQing.
