Last night I received a phone call from a former Tsinghua student who was a student in my class when I lectured there in 2004. Since then he has come to the US received his graduate degree and started his academic career. He called to inform me that he has just received word from the Dean at Harvard that he has been appoiinted as a permanent tenured faculty member in the Harvard school of Applied Science and Engineering - My former department before I retired in 2007 - and the ultimate for anyone's acadamic career. He thank me for being a role model for him, a very Chinese thing to do. BTW, I did not have anything to do with his appointment and his expertise was not the same as mine. I was enormously honored and happy to see him living the American Drean just like I was some six decades ago. It reminded me of the old Chinese saying about "successive wave that comes shore" that repeats history. How sweet it is!
