I have been doing full-time editing for more than a year now. From time to time, someone (often a friend) asks me how to get started, because he is retiring, retired or wants to quit research.
Personally, I think anyone with the ability to write research papers in English can become a freelancer. To become a full-time freelancer, it's better to start with some savings (or a partner's support with steady income for the household).
Just as Rome was not built in one day, a business takes years to grow. When I started freelancing, some friends told me that it would take three years to see profit. I didn't believe it, since all I need is a laptop, I thought. Well, I was right in a small way, but to make a living to support oneself fully (not to mention a family) it takes time.
Here I am, seven years later, from part-time to full-time, I still have not reached my goal, namely, to support myself as a freelancer (since I have mortgage to pay), but I am getting there
