《艰难时世》（Hard Times）据说狄更斯结构最精的小说，开篇的一段话很好：

Now, what I want is, Facts. Teach these boys and girls nothing but Facts. Facts alone are wanted in life. Plant nothing else. And root out everything else. You can only form the minds of reasoning animals upon Facts: nothing else will ever be of any service to them. This is the principle on which I bring up my own children, and this is the principle on which I bring up these children. Stick to Facts, sir!

我想它应该成为我们作文的第一原则。道理当然很简单，做起来却不容易，常会发生些许的偏离——

最大的偏离，也许是拿常识和普适的东西来当“事实”。这是浪费，浪费资源，更浪费生命。虽然“科学需要积累”，但绝不需要如此的堆积——如果一门学问只有一堆写满相同“事实”的废纸，当然就成了字纸篓和垃圾堆。

“事实”也常常成为没有思想的借口。我们很容易看到，一篇没有思想的文章，一定净是“事实”，连每一个单字都长满了事实的老茧。要为论文打分，有一个很简单的标准：自己的东西算正分，重复的东西算负分，这样算来，还有多少可以得零分的？
