年终总结，总说做了什么，特别是做了什么大事，而不太总结没做什么，多少能做的没做，该做的没做，有几回是做自己？

“归去来兮，田园将芜胡不归？既自以心为形役，奚惆怅而独悲？……”这可能是陶渊明的多年总结，写出了多少人的心声？

有人问乔伊斯，战争时期（第一次世界大战）在做什么，老乔回答，写《尤利西斯》（Ulysses）呀，你呢？

还有一个相似的故事。有人问Margart Mitchell近来做什么，她回答：全职做《飘》的作者呀！（it is a full-time job to be the author of Gone With the Wind）

大散文家EB White（1899-1985，他的书比他老人家出名，现在都能看到，我就不多说了）很欣赏（treasure）Mitchell小姐的态度，在A report in January（见他的随笔集Here is New York）里，他说他有天早晨想起这句话，便在脑子里整理一天的活儿，做什么呢？最后明白了，生活在新英格兰的冬天，也是一份儿“全职”，什么也不必做了——

I felt a kinship with Miss Mitchell and comforted myself with the pleasing thought that just to live in New England in winter is a full-time job; you don’t have to “do” anything. The idle pursuit of making-a-living is pushed to one side, where it belongs, in favor of living itself, a task of such immediacy, variety, beauty, and excitement that one is powerless to resist its wild embrace.

Immediacy这个词儿说生活，看起来很直接，想起来却不那么直接——有点儿像数学证明里常说的，it immediately follows that……只有当我们熟悉了它的全部，才能一下子发现它的意义。
