咖啡（coffee）据传说是公元850年前后一个名叫卡沃地（Kaldi）阿拉伯牧羊人观察发现，羊群是吃了某种红色果实兴奋不已，他自己也好奇地尝了一些，发现这些果实使人精神亢奋爽快，这种神奇果实的效力因此流传开来。之后阿拉伯人研究出喝这种豆子的饮料，称之为“gahwah（意思为酒，也有人说是由Kaldi读音而来）”，土耳其人称为kahve，意大利人称为caffe，法国人称为cafe，而英国人称为coffee。

如今英美人嗜之如命，并且推崇备至。随手举几个名言可知：

我第一次接触咖啡是在外教家里，当时感觉闻起来醇香扑鼻。虽然预先听从老师教导，加了不少糖，但入口还是觉得很苦涩。后来在英国期间，每天早晨从楼道和办公室里飘浮的咖啡香味让人印象深刻。但我从来不再试过。

海南种植、生产咖啡，闻名的咖啡有福山咖啡、力神咖啡和兴隆咖啡。虽然我就生活、工作在咖啡产地，但我却没有享受这种东西。
