前些日子规划研究任务时，我把部分工作安排到了圣诞节（当然是不得已为之）。导师看到之后，努努嘴，我便不假思索解释道：“That's ok… Christmas means nothing to me.”孰知他听后大笑，赶忙拿起纸笔记下这句话，说道：“这话在我们西方人看来太怪异了，不过考虑到文化的差异这却非常有趣。我一定要在你毕业时加上这句话！”

这让我想起了荷兰人的博士毕业论文。荷兰的博士论文装订精美，在封面与首页之间夹有一枚书签和一张个人陈述。由于是活页，这张非正式的个人陈述可以有一些科学研究之外的个性化内容。于是，个人陈述的前半部分是关于博士论文的核心内容或纲要，而后半部分则是一些幽默轻松的语句。导师办公室的书架上就摆着一排这样的论文，其中包括他自己论文的几份印刷本，另有二十多本论文是他在荷兰时的同事或前辈赠送的。我逐个翻阅，摘抄部分有趣的句子如下。

1. 原创的幽默：

In the kitchen, a creative scientist is either an excellent cook or a very dangerous one.

A wedding proposal should be made within the first two years of a relationship.

Submerging yourself in a different culture is an amazing way to discover more about your own.

There is nothing bubbles can't fix.

2. 直接引用的幽默：

Love is merely a madness, and, I tell you, deserve as well a dark house and a whip as madmen do (W. Shakespeare. As You Like It – Act III, Scence II).

插言：科学家在引用文学作品时也是这般细致。

3. 貌似多余的幽默：

A mouse should not be mistaken as a small rat.

Learning French is the only way to truly understand the French.

Science is fun.

由于大部分论文的个人陈述是用荷兰语写的，我不知道里面究竟写了些什么，但我相信其中必定有许多有趣的内容。

科学是有趣的，科学家往往也很有趣。
