Unit 19-20 Idioms with Words that Go Together

1. My mother told me to pack warm clothes for the trip, but above all, not to forget my toothbrush.

2. I thought that I could complete my homework and go to the movie. But I didn’t have time to do both after all, and I missed the movie.

3. Isn’t Doug here at the party yet? Don’t worry. He’s coming. He’ll be here before long.

4. One card for you. One card for me. One card for you. One card for me…We each get every other one.

5. I’ve more or less finished painting the kitchen. There’s just one small corner left.

6. Never mind about the broken vase. It wasn’t very expensive, and I can buy another.

7. No wonder the TV wasn’t working. It wasn’t plugged in.

8. Lee won the grand prize the other day. He’s already bought a new car.

9. I’ve asked those children quite a few times not to play football near my window. But they don’t pay attention to me.

10. I know that Frank is always late, but sooner or later he’ll get here.

11. Take it easy. You don’t have to drive so fast. We’ll get there on time.

12. I was halfway to work, when all of a sudden I remembered that I’d left the water running in the bathtub. I turned around and went back home to turn it off.

13. Jimmy loves motorcycles. As a matter of fact, he has three of them in his garage.

14. Lydia is good at math. Even so, she had trouble doing the last homework problem.

15. We always have hamburgers on Thursdays. Let’s have snails for a change.

16. I had a really bad morning. For a start, my alarm clock didn’t ring. And that was just the first in a series of disasters.

17. Yes, I have lost weight. In fact, I’ve lost twenty-two pounds.

18. If we can’t think of anywhere to go on Saturday, we might as well stay home.

19. I don’t see my old friends often these days. We see one another only once in a while.

20. Don’t tell me that was an accident. You did that on purpose.

21. I sometimes have eggs for breakfast. But, on the whole, I try to avoid eating them.

22. Let’s take turns washing the dishes. You do them this year, and I’ll do them next year.
