【Lanzhou, December 13, 2024】The Gas Geochemistry Academic Symposium was successfully held in Lanzhou City on December 13. The event was organized by the Gas Geochemistry Professional Committee of the Chinese Mineralogy, Petrology, and Geochemistry Society and hosted jointly by the Oil and Gas Resources Research Center of the Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the Key Laboratory of Oil and Gas Resource Exploration and Evaluation of Gansu Province, and the Geochemical Analysis and Testing Center of the Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources of CAS.

The symposium brought together nearly 100 senior, mid-career, and young scientists across China. It was opened by Researcher Li Zhongping, Secretary-General of the Gas Geochemistry Professional Committee. Prof. Zheng Guodong, Chair of the committee, delivered a speech emphasizing the pivotal role of gas geochemistry as an interdisciplinary field that plays a critical part in geology, energy science, disaster warning, ecological optimization, and environmental protection. Prof. Fan Qiaohui, Director of the Oil and Gas Resources Research Center at the Northwest Institute, warmly welcomed and thanked the experts who had traveled from all over the country to attend despite the cold weather.

During the opening ceremony, invited experts including Prof. Chen Duofu from Shanghai Ocean University, Prof. Lu Shuangfang from Northeast Petroleum University, Prof. Tian Hui from the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry of CAS, Prof. Wang Xiaofeng from Northwest University, Researcher Ma Yunqi from the Qinghai Salt Lake Institute of CAS, Prof.  Chen Zhi from the Earthquake Prediction Institute of China Earthquake Administration, Senior Engineer Su Hejun from the Gansu Provincial Seismological Bureau, Prof.  Liu Changjie and Associate Prof.  Li Ping from the Oil and Gas Resources Research Center of CAS's Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources presented insightful academic reports on topics such as the thermodynamic stability of methane-hydrogen hydrates in Mariana Arc serpentinite mud volcanoes and isotopic fractionation during shale gas analysis and migration processes and its significance for exploration and development.

The symposium not only promoted exchanges and cooperation among the domestic gas geochemistry community but also highlighted the broad application prospects of gas geochemistry technology through multidisciplinary discussions and technical demonstrations. Participants expressed that they gained valuable knowledge. Young scholars from the host organizations showcased their latest research progress and technical platform developments to the attendees.

The one-day symposium concluded successfully, serving both as a summary of past achievements and an outlook on future directions. With the collective efforts of all professionals, it is believed that the field of gas geochemistry will continue to thrive, contributing wisdom and strength to addressing global energy and environmental issues.
