A correlation of zero implies that there is no LINEAR relationship between X and Y. It is possible that a strong curvilinear relationship can have a correlation coefficient of zero. You should ALWAYS examine a scatterplot of X vs. Y before calculating the correlation coefficient to check that their relationship can be assumed linear.
The Pearson correlation coefficient (r) between X and Y is 0.8, only indicate that X and Y are hightly correlated, but can not say the change of X causes the changes of Y.
The r2 measures the variance of X or Y that can be explained by Y or X
