Encouraging research developments by BASF Catalysts scientists may lead to more efficient pollution controls for diesel engines in the near future, as reported at the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) International Heavy Duty Diesel Emissions Symposium in
“In recent months we have successfully combined a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and a Catalyzed Soot Filter (CSF) on a single substrate,” said Dr. Kenneth Voss, senior research associate, BASF Catalysts. “The evolution of multifunctional components, which combine the functionality of a DOC, CSF, and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), is an essential step forward in the search for better diesel emission controls.”
Speaking at the SAE’s international conference on technologies to control diesel emissions, Voss said that BASF’s test results for the combined treatment show good performance when compared to the separate component arrangement commonly used on most heavy duty diesel engines today.
“We see potential space savings and improved savings in overall costs,” said Voss whose comments were delivered during discussions about emissions control strategies.
Emission controls for heavy duty diesels have relied upon bulky, independent components integrated into the exhaust system. Voss sees this new development as the first step toward producing a single platform approach with 4-way pollution control. “The ultimate goal is to achieve a 4-way control for NOx (nitrogen oxides), PM (particulate matter), HC (hydrocarbons) and CO (carbon monoxide) in one single component,” said Voss.
Such a development would mirror the successful transition that earlier BASF Catalysts scientists achieved with the introduction of the three-way catalytic (TWC) system for gasoline-powered automobiles. Introduced more than 30 years ago, the TWC system is in use today on most automobiles sold in the world today.
