一个有趣的词 substitute

看看它的用法（源于金山词霸2009牛津版）：

1. 被动

Dried rosemary can be substituted for the fresh herb.

干迷迭香可用来代替鲜草。

2. 主动（居然for还需要存在）

I found someone to substitute for me.

我找到了一个人接替我。

3. 被动

this was substituted by a new clause.

这由一个新条款替换了。

4. 主动

customs officers substituted the drugs with another substance.

海关官员用另外一种东西替换了毒品.

有趣吧？做“替代”意思时和replace可不完全一样，可以按传统用法接介词by和with，但更多的是和for捆绑销售，后接被替代物。再看看replace

1. 被动：

Lan's smile was replaced by a frown.

伊恩的微笑被皱眉所代替。

2. 主动

The government dismissed 3,000 of its customs inspectors, replacing them with new recruits.

政府解雇了3,000名海关检查员，用新雇员替代了他们。
