The Journal of Industrial Ecology has recently published a
special issue on Complexity and Industrial Ecology (J. Ind. Ecology
13(2), 2009). The special issue presents emerging work on applying
complex systems theory to improve the understanding of the
sustainability and evolution of anthropogenic systems. The opening
editorial summarizes the content of the issue and is available for
free download. The special issue is available at
<http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/journal/122352252/issue>.
To provide a holistic perspective, the "Forum" articles in this
special issue address:
* industrial ecology as a normative discipline
* a sociotechnical complex systems perspective as a
foundation for industrial ecology
* the implications of 21st century technology trends for the
sociotechnical design space
* complexity and transition management
* complex systems science and participatory modeling, role
play and games
The "Research and Analysis" Articles report emerging work on the
operationalization of theories and tools such as:
* multi-agent systems, agent-based modeling (ABM), and
system-of-systems
* input-output analysis, system dynamics and optimization.
* the combination of ABM and life cycle assessment
Regions and topics examined include:
* urban development, industrial regions
* urban, energy and industrial infrastructure
