In this article, the notion of pinning control for directed networks of dynamical systems is introduced, where the nodes could be either single-input single-output (SISO) or multi-input multi-output (MIMO) dynamical systems, and could be non-identical and nonlinear in general but will be specified to be identical linear time-invariant (LTI) systems here in the study of network controllability. Both state and structural controllability problems will be discussed, illustrating how the network topology, node-system dynamics, external control inputs and inner dynamical interactions altogether affect the controllability of a general complex network of LTI systems, with necessary and sufficient conditions presented for both SISO and MIMO settings. To that end, the controllability of a special temporally switching directed network of linear time-varying (LTV) node systems will be addressed, leaving some more general networks and challenging issues to the end for research outlook.

In recent years, theoretical and practical research on event-based communication strategies has gained considerable research attention due primarily to their irreplaceable superiority in resource-constrained systems (especially networked systems). For networked systems, event-based transmission scheme is capable of improving the efficiency in resource utilization and prolonging the lifetime of the network components compared with the widely adopted periodic transmission scheme. As such, it would be interesting to 1) examining how the event-triggering mechanisms affect the control or filtering performance for networked systems, and 2) developing some suitable approaches for the controller and filter design problems. In this paper, a bibliographical review is presented on event-based control and filtering problems for various networked systems. First, the event-driven communication scheme is introduced in detail according to its engineering background, characteristic, and representative research frameworks. Then, different event-based control and filtering (or state estimation) problems are categorized and then discussed. Finally, we conclude the paper by outlining future research challenges for event-based networked systems.

The frame rate of conventional vision systems is restricted to the video signal formats (e.g., NTSC 30 fps and PAL 25 fps) that are designed on the basis of the characteristics of the human eye, which implies that the processing speed of these systems is limited to the recognition speed of the human eye. However, there is a strong demand for real-time high-speed vision sensors in many application fields, such as factory automation, biomedicine, and robotics, where high-speed operations are carried out. These high-speed operations can be tracked and inspected by using high-speed vision systems with intelligent sensors that work at hundreds of Hertz or more, especially when the operation is difficult to observe with the human eye. This paper reviews advances in developing real-time high speed vision systems and their applications in various fields, such as intelligent logging systems, vibration dynamics sensing, vision-based mechanical control, three-dimensional measurement/automated visual inspection, vision-based human interface, and biomedical applications.

Day by day, networked control system (NCS) methods have been promoted for distributed closed-loop control systems. Interestingly, the integration of control and computing theories enhanced the development of networked control systems through remote control for wide applications employing the internet. Two further directions to networked control technology are Leader-Follower systems and model predictive control systems. Cloud control system is looked at an extension of networked control systems (NCS) using internet of things (IOT) methodologies. In this paper, a comprehensive literature survey of the new technology of control systems application performed on cloud computing is presented.

The deregulation of the electricity market made the open communication infrastructure an exigent need for future power system. In this scenario dedicated communication links are replaced by shared networks. These shared networks are characterized by random time delay and data loss. The random time delay and data loss may lead to system instability if they are not considered during the controller design stage. Load frequency control systems used to rely on dedicated communication links. To meet future power system challenges these dedicated networks are replaced by open communication links which makes the system stochastic. In this paper, the stochastic stabilization of load frequency control system under networked environment is investigated. The shared network is represented by three states which are governed by Markov chains. A controller synthesis method based on the stochastic stability criteria is presented in the paper. A one-area load frequency control system is chosen as case study. The effectiveness of the proposed method for the controller synthesis is tested through simulation. The derived proportion integration (PI) controller proves to be optimum where it is a compromise between compensating the random time delay effects and degrading the system dynamic performance. The range of the PI controller gains that guarantee the stochastic stability is determined. Also the range of the PI controller gains that achieve the robust stochastic stability is determined where the decay rate is used to measure the robustness of the system. In this paper, the results of different aspects of NCSs, such as quantization, estimation, fault detection and networked predictive control, are summarized. In addition, with the development of cloud technique, cloud control systems are proposed for the further development of NCSs.

A new semi-blind adaptive beamforming scheme is proposed for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) induced and spacedivision multiple-access based wireless systems that employ high order phase shift keying signaling. A minimum number of training symbols, very close to the number of receiver antenna elements, are used to provide a rough initial least squares estimate of the beamformer’s weight vector. A novel cost function combining the constant modulus criterion with decision-directed adaptation is adopted to adapt the beamformer weight vector. This cost function can be approximated as a quadratic form with a closed-form solution, based on which we then derive the recursive least squares (RLS) semi-blind adaptive beamforming algorithm. This semi-blind adaptive beamforming scheme is capable of converging fast to the minimum mean-square-error beamforming solution, as demonstrated in our simulation study. Our proposed semi-blind RLS beamforming algorithm therefore provides an efficient detection scheme for the future generation of MIMO aided mobile communication systems.

Waterflooding is a process where water is injected into an oil reservoir to supplement its natural pressure for increment in productivity. The reservoir properties are highly heterogeneous, its states change as production progresses which require varying injection and production settings for economic recovery. As water is injected into the reservoir, more oil is expected to be produced. There is also likelihood that water is produced in association with the oil. The worst case is when the injected water meanders through the reservoir, it bypasses pools of oil and gets produced. Therefore, any effort geared toward finding the optimal settings to maximize the value of this venture can never be over emphasized. Waterflooding can be formulated as an optimal control problem. However, traditional optimal control is an open-loop solution, hence cannot cope with various uncertainties inevitably existing in any practical systems. Reservoir models are highly uncertain. Its properties are known with some degrees of certainty near the well-bore region only. In this work, a novel data-driven approach for control variable (CV) selection was proposed and applied to reservoir waterflooding process for a feedback strategy resulting in optimal or near optimal operation. The results indicated that the feedback control method was close to optimal in the absence of uncertainty. The loss recorded in the value of performance index, net present value (NPV) was only 0.26%. Furthermore, the new strategy performs better than the open-loop optimal control solution when system/model mismatch was considered. The performance depends on the scale of the uncertainty introduced. A gain in NPV as high as 30.04% was obtained.

This paper addresses the state estimation problem for linear systems with additive uncertainties in both the state and output equations using a moving horizon approach. Based on the full information estimation setting and the game-theoretic approach to the H∞ filtering, a new optimization-based estimation scheme for uncertain linear systems is proposed, namely the H∞-full information estimator, H∞-FIE in short. In this formulation, the set of processed data grows with time as more measurements are received preventing recursive formulations as in Kalman filtering. To overcome the latter problem, a moving horizon approximation to the H∞-FIE is also presented, the H∞-MHE in short. This moving horizon approximation is achieved since the arrival cost is suitably defined for the proposed scheme. Sufficient conditions for the stability of the H∞-MHE are derived. Simulation results show the benefits of the proposed scheme when compared with two H∞ filters and the well-known Kalman filter.

Standard genetic algorithms (SGAs) are investigated to optimise discrete-time proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller parameters, by three tuning approaches, for a multivariable glass furnace process with loop interaction. Initially, standard genetic algorithms (SGAs) are used to identify control oriented models of the plant which are subsequently used for controller optimisation. An individual tuning approach without loop interaction is considered first to categorise the genetic operators, cost functions and improve searching boundaries to attain the desired performance criteria. The second tuning approach considers controller parameters optimisation with loop interaction and individual cost functions. While, the third tuning approach utilises a modified cost function which includes the total effect of both controlled variables, glass temperature and excess oxygen. This modified cost function is shown to exhibit improved control robustness and disturbance rejection under loop interaction.

In this paper, two types of mathematical models are developed to describe the dynamics of large-scale nonlinear systems, which are composed of several interconnected nonlinear subsystems. Each subsystem can be described by an input-output nonlinear discrete-time mathematical model, with unknown, but constant or slowly time-varying parameters. Then, two recursive estimation methods are used to solve the parametric estimation problem for the considered class of the interconnected nonlinear systems. These methods are based on the recursive least squares techniques and the prediction error method. Convergence analysis is provided using the hyper-stability and positivity method and the differential equation approach. A numerical simulation example of the parametric estimation of a stochastic interconnected nonlinear hydraulic system is treated.
