Shiyan Middle School,
Xuchang,Henan Province,
Nov.3rd,2011.
My dear son,
I have many words to tell you since you graduated from high school and became a freshman. I
often feel very lucky whenever I think of you, especially when you are talked about as a
happy and healthy boy by the teachers. Many students here admire you because of your
success on both sports, breaking 3 school records, and study. There are a hundred times or
so for me to echo the name of university you are studying in to those kind and friendly
asking about. But I’ll never be tired of doing it even if there are another hundred times.
You came to the wonderful world on time, just on the day that your father and I expected.
Perhaps I was strong and healthy, or perhaps you were so little, only 3.05kg. I endured
a little trouble, not so much as other mothers. How lucky we were! I believe the success
came from my strict diet according to a book Education of 5 Periods. From then on, it
has been in my blood that purpose reading will do benefit to me.
Do you remember the summer holiday in Suzhou for the first time? Do you remember the Army
which your father worked in? We went there together for the first time when you were two
and a half years old. We enjoyed ourselves everyday, reciting Poems Tang, singing songs,
and watching long bunches of boats be busy to and fro on the Grand Canal. For the second
time there the next year, we often went out to catch fish and lobsters. Sometimes, we played at the sand hill nearby, looking for colorful shells or jumping down crazily
from the top to the bottom without shoes. Although it was just a dozen days, we toured not
only the beautiful Liuyuan, Xiyuan, but also the large Zhuozhengyuan and Huqiu. For the
third time there, your favourite game was playing Monk Tang Riding Horse with me.
Later, I went to study in Capital Normal University for two and a half years. Life without
you was a kind of vacancy, but I gained believing and courage there on how to be a better
maths teacher. Meanwhile, I realized children should grow up happily, and can learn the
knowledge arranged for them gladly. I was then ready for studying all my life, being a
lifelong learner, and never criticizing but directing each of my students. Of course, to
nurture my son is a piece of cake.
After about three years, I finished my studying and got a Master’s degree. We lived
together with your father again, and we had a real entire family. We listened to the radio
at the same time everyday, beginning with The Way of Yaoming. Each of us three lectured an
interesting story after supper. I also read your magazine Little Readers, and was usually
moved by those wonderful stories or delicate sad stories, such as The Story of Three
Bags of Mixed Rice. You persisted in writing diaries about your lovely pigeon. You learned
swimming quickly in a week, and then was interested in violin instead of table tennis and
gymnastic. What did it matter?
During your junior school time, you became a deligent teenager, and grasped the way how to
perceive the konwledge delivered by the teachers in classroom. So, you made great progress
step by step, and became one of the top students at last.
During the senior high school period, the amount of your knowledge was not increasing at an
unchanged speed, but accelerative. When we listened to MP3, you liked to turn the voice
speed faster and faster in order to finish it early and start a new programme. By the time
you graduated, we had enjoyed 35 novels, 133 songs and pieces of music, and 40 films and
drama serials. You were always reading a new and best book. I often thought that no books,
perhaps, could be better than this one. However, no sooner did you usually bring home
another newer and better book than you had finished the last one excitedly.
You will have given me 18 years’ sweet happiness. Time flies like an arrow, and your 18th
birthday is coming. You will say goodbye to your teenager and be an adult. Actually, I
regard you as my close friend all the time. Is there a real boundaryline between a teenager
and an adult? I don’t think so. But I hope you are getting stronger and stronger, having an
adult physical system, so, you can shoulder heavier burden, and have enough energy to do
what you want to do. On the other hand, I hope you are happy and gay like a little kid
forever. In other words, I hope you’ve been keeping an innocent nature heart, not so busy
like some other people.
As a matter of fact, your real life has not begun yet.You should still get ready for it. I
hope you are always yourself because you are different from others. There’s only one you in
the world, isn’t there? You can learn virtues from others, while never compare yourself with
others.
Do whatever you want to do,
Say whatever you want to say,
Eat whatever you want to eat,
Go wherever you want to go.
You come to the wonderful world,
The wonderful world belongs to you!
Love you forever
Your dear mother,
Huimin Wang
