规则关键在落实
澳洲我所在的大学的研究生院对在读的研究生(包括硕士生和博士生)通常一年要考核两次,六月份一次,年底一次。所谓考核其实就是给学生发一份问卷(A),导师发一份问卷(B)。问的问题应该大同小异。为什么说“应该”呢?因为虽然大致相同的两份问者,但老师和学生是要独立完成。除了这两份问卷外,导师和学生还要一起完成一份研究生院的问卷(C)。问卷C其实很简单,主要是要求导师和学生一起商量如何制定下一步的研究计划以及何时和如何完成。那么先说说作为导师,我手里拿到的问卷B。一共五个大问题,应该很快就能完成。但仔细推敲起来还是很有点意思。
首先说,我的学生有一半来自国内,一半是国际学生。我这几个国际学生面对这个问卷,态度非常认真。比如说第一个问题,是关于是否完成了去年年的研究目标。要知道这个科研目标(target),就是问卷C中导师和学生一起制定的,里面会有相对具体的比如什么时间完成什么实验,什么时间完成建模,什么时间完成会议/期刊论文等等。那么面对这第一个问题,我这三个国际学生都态度都非常谨慎,不断地斟酌自己是否达到了上次制定的目标?最后还是选了partially。然后洋洋洒洒地写了一堆解释。第二个问题如果工作的时间选了30-40个小时,他们会非常严格地遵守。举个例子,比如有一天他有什么私事半天没来上班,这不需要导师监督他会主动在周末加班,目的是把那耽误的半天时间补回来。
我也有几个中国学生,当然也都非常努力,非常优秀。但他们跟这些国际学生比起来,对这种规则的理解和执行却不是那么严格。我这里没有批评的意思。我主要是想做一下“自我批评”。我这里对“自我批评”加引号的意思是,我不太确定这是个优点还是缺点。我平时对学生(这里主要指博士生)是尽量创造一个相对宽松的环境。也就是说在保持一定压力的条件下尽量给他们尽可能的自由。比如说一天工作多少小时,是在办公室还是在家里?这些事就自己决定吧。酒肉穿肠过,佛祖心中留。在哪感觉舒服,在哪感觉状态好,就在哪。没必要太死板地必须白天8小时在办公室,不要为了完成任务而完成任务。我们的目标是解决可以科研问题,我们要的是进展,要的是结果,过程自己掌控。所以,我的中国学生我从来不去他们的办公室查岗,但每次跟我meeting,从他们疲惫的眼神里,从他们的工作进展,我敢肯定他们的工作时间远远超过一周40个小时的规则要求。
总体来说,无论国内来的学生还是国际学生,他们的研究进展都不错。这里不谈的他们具体的科研能力,其实各有所长,各有千秋。但比较起来,尤其是对规则或者说研究计划的执行方面。这些国际学生表现地更有条理,更有计划,似乎是融入血液的品质。准确地讲他们更诚实,无论是对导师还是对自己,当然也是对大学研究院。诚实的最大好处是简单。而我国内的学生,我这里不是说他们不诚实,也不是批评。而是一种习惯性地态度不足够扎实,尤其是对规则的态度。这里估计也有我的对他们的影响。有时候,我藐视规则。但我也反思,为什么我们国内来的无论学生还是老师都对规则的态度不是那么认真呢?而这些国际学生或老师却都能“任劳任怨”地执行呢?大学研究生院一年仅仅通过这两次问卷调查就能掌控全校研究生的学习/科研进展,靠得是什么?靠得就是师生对规则的认真执行。没有严格落实,规则形同虚设。想到这些,其实是很简单的道理。而我包括我的国内来的学生,也应该时时反思一下自己的习惯。成长是全方位的,活到老,学到老。
科研之余,胡思乱想,随手记下。有则改之,无则加勉。
