It goes without anyslightest question that books play a vital important role in human’s lives. However, it is pointed out that Chinese people read fewer paper books nowadays, compared with those read by people in other countries, such as French andIsraelis. As far I am concerned, there are two major factors accounting forthis embarrassing fact.
On the one hand, people in China are toobusy to spend enough time on reading books. Obviously, people have to face variousstress, especially the economical one and they have no choice but to work hardto get necessary earnings. What is worse, they must work with longer time nowand then in case of losing their jobs in such a fiercely competitive society. As a result, they are so tired that they pay less attention to reading and undoubtedlyonly 4.77 paper books are read by Chinese adults per capita according to a nationalsurvey.
On the other hand, there is an increasing materialdemand for most Chinese people currently. With the progress of economy, livesin China have become rich and colorful and people prefer to lose themselves inthe material enjoyment. Besides, people are judged to be successful mainly bythe fortune you have owned. Therefore, they emphasize on the material interestsrather than the spiritual pursuit. Accordingly, people do not enjoy reading.
To cope with this sad and terrible situation,we must encourage people to read and help people to realize the great significanceof reading. Only in this way, can we read more and more books gradually. Readingis a fantastic investment for individuals as well as our society. It is worthit in the past, present and future.
