The Model C first flew on Nov. 5, 1916. It was the second airplane designed by the new company but was designated (标明为)the C-4 because it was the fourth airplane owned by William Boeing.
An improved Model C, with a bigger rudder(舵), made its first flight
April 9, 1917. Two weeks later, Boeing changed the name of Pacific Aero Products to Boeing Airplane Company.
On May 22, 1917, a month after President Woodrow Wilson declared war on Germany, Boeing issued Wong a check for $50.77 for "payment in full for services rendered".
1916 Nov. 15: William Boeing watches pilot Herb Munter take the Model C, designed by Boeing's first aeronautical engineer Tsu Wong, above Lake Union on its first flight. Munter finds the rudder is too small, and it goes back to the shop(注意直接去商店买舵)for a new rudder.
Wong graduated from MIT in June 1916 and had learned to
fly at the Flying Boat School of the Curtiss Co., Buffalo, N.Y.
He talked to Westervelt, now aboard the USS Wyoming in New
York harbor, and then headed to Seattle to work on the Model C, using data from the MIT wind tunnel and research from
Gustav Eiffel. Wong was able to test his theories in the air.
In a speech delivered in 1997 by Boeing CEO Phil Condit to the National Academy of Engineers, he said that "The Boeing Company was founded in 1916 by aviation pioneer Bill Boeing. He hired Tsu Wong as the company's first aeronautical engineer to replace Boeing's original business partner, Conrad Westerveldt. An engineering graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Tsu Wong became the first chief engineer at Boeing. During those early days of the company, employees such as Tsu Wong sat together at the Red Barn, the company's first building in Seattle. Engineers upstairs; builders downstairs ... working together side by side ... solving problems."
