By the time you finish elementary school, you know a little:

By the time you finish high school, you know a bit more:
当你获得学士学位的时候,你获得了一项特长:
With a bachelor's degree, you gain a specialty:
而硕士学位使得你的特长更加扎实:
A master's degree deepens that specialty:
通过阅读研究相关的论文你可以了解人类知识的边缘所在:
Reading research papers takes you to the edge of human knowledge:
当你处在人类知识的边缘时,你就需要专注一点进行研究了:
Once you're at the boundary, you focus:
你需要在这个边缘地点进行数年的努力钻研:
You push at the boundary for a few years:
直到有一天,你突破了边缘的限制:
Until one day, the boundary gives way:
那时,你所完成的那个小突破(凹坑)就叫做“博士”:
And, that dent you've made is called a Ph.D.:

Of course, the world looks different to you now:
所以,别忘记了整个图景(不要以个人的经验随意扩大,勿认为你经历的就是整个世界的样子):
So, don't forget the bigger picture:
还需记得,即便拿到了博士学位,也要一直努力哈。
