竹林寺，位于镇江南山风景名胜区。竹林寺，因各种名贵竹种都有，原山野间竹林似海，竹林寺院全部掩映于竹涛之中，故得此名。崖顶处有一古“挹江亭”。登立亭中，透过树的间隙，能从丛山空隙处远见长江上焦山、北固间江面的片片樯帆或点点渔火，有荡涤尘嚣之乐。

竹林寺始建于东晋，为法安禅师所创，初名“夹山禅院”。雍正年间，为竹林寺全盛时期，全寺有殿宇259间，到民国尚有僧侣数百，寺内设有佛学院。解放初，竹林寺方丈真禅法师、监院淦泉法师赴上海主持“玉佛寺”。由于历史上的种种原因竹林寺历经风雨，饱经磨难，先后四次毁坏：即太平天国、抗日战争、解放战争、文革时期。

历代文人墨客到镇江，必到竹林寺游览，留下墨宝若干，最有名的是郑板桥在《招隐寺》写下的“满江红”一首：转过山头，隐隐见松林，一片云中有佛楼，斜角红鹿，半闲雨后寻芳。软衢傍山饮，村醪贱听，泉幽涧响。琼珍清而浅，山容金泥匾，诚树下香涂店。看几朝营建，几朝褒贬，七级浮屠。空累积，救社宇，谁听见问禅肩合掌？问宗风斜阳远。
