南山位于江苏省镇江市区南侧，坐标为东经119°25'00”-119°27'30”，北纬32°08'20”-32°11'40”。南山为宁镇山脉的余脉，主峰为九华山，海拔185米，为南山的最高峰。南山大约形成于中生代末期，是燕山的造山运动中形成的山脉。南山是由褶皱、断裂等经亿万年的地质构造和长期的侵蚀、剥蚀、溶蚀作用形成的低山，包括了九华山、黄鹤山、磨笄山诸山体，诸山体统称为南山。

镇江南山原名兽窟山，因南朝宋名士戴颙隐居于此，故又称招隐山。招隐山中有昭明太子读书处。后来，宋著名书画家米芾长期隐居地，米芾称这里为“山林在城中，城中有山林”，并题下“城市山林”的墨宝。南郊名胜在南郊诸山，首推招隐山。满山苍松翠柏、参天拔地。春夏之际，但闻鸟鸣千啭，蝉吟不穷，清泉淙淙，一片清凉世界；晚秋时分，红叶经霜，灿然若火，浓荫藏寺，五色纷披，更是一幅图画。

南山的文化历史可以追溯至南北朝时期的宋武帝，历代文士名流多曾在此居住游览，素有“烟雨南山”和“城市山林”之美誉。历代文士名流曾在南山居住、游览，留下了诸多珍贵的古迹和文学著作。比较著名的有南朝梁昭明太子博邀《文心雕龙》著作刘勰等天下贤才，在南山的招隐增华阁编纂了中国文学史上第一部文学选集《昭明文选》。北宋大书画家米芾、米友仁父子居此四十年，创作了“米氏云山”。东晋南朝刘宋两代间的著名雕塑家、音乐家戴颙隐居于此，谱就了“广陵”、“游弦”和“止息”三首古曲。宋代大诗人苏东坡在鹤林寺留下了“苏公竹院”，哲学家、文学家周敦颐凿留了“茂叔莲池”。明朝计成在此完成了中国古代留存下来的唯一一部园林专著——《园冶》。
