Cover story Four members of family Chenopodiaceae have been reported to perform single-cell C4 photosynthesis through partitioning of major organelles and enzymes in separate intracellular cytoplasmic compartments. The cover shows a branch of Bienertia sinuspersici with salt glands covering the leaves and images of isolated chlorenchyma cells (top left) from mature leaves stained with fluorescent dye (top right) to display the unique intracellular organization of organelles. The middle left image shows an intact protoplast prepared from the isolated chlorenchyma cell and a protoplast stained with DAPI to reveal the nucleus. The lower images show protoplasts transfected with green fluorescent protein fusion constructs to label the actin and microtubule cytoskeleton. Chlorophyll autofluorescence is in red.
