Abstract: Pollinators of the exceedingly rich Asian flora remainpoorly known due in part to the great difficulty of identifying Asian bees. This talk will begin with examples of field and museum research on bees andintroduce resources designed to facilitate these studies, in particular newonline biodiversity portals featuring specimen records, dynamic identificationkeys, image databases, and global maps. Examples from Singapore and Cambodiawill illustrate how difficult taxonomic problems can be resolved with anintegrative taxonomic approach incorporating both traditional morphological andscholarly study and new molecular techniques such as Next-gen DNA barcoding andpopulation genomics. Advancing bee taxonomy will be presented not as an end initself but rather as a prerequisite for ecological studies, such as documentingnew species interactions, e.g., recent discovery of previously undetectednative pollinators visiting reintroduced Tiger Orchids in Singapore parks.Characteristics of the Chinese bee fauna will then be reviewed based on anunpublished compilation of data for all valid species and the results of jointfield work conducted by the Institute of Zoology and American Museum of NaturalHistory. Finally, prospects for resolving the severe taxonomic impediments tostudy of Chinese bees will be discussed, involving broadening and scaling up ofsuccessful collaborations.
