During the last three decades, CTFS-ForestGEO (http://www. forestgeo.si.edu/), a worldwide network of over 60 long-term forest dynamics plots (FDPs), has been established for monitoring of community dynamics in forest ecosystems and investigation of community assembly mechanisms (Anderson-Teixeira et al., 2015). To date, millions of trees representing over 10,000 species have been tagged, mapped, and identified. The application of well-resolved phylogenies based on the DNA barcode sequences of species within these communities is substantially improving our understanding of community assembly mechanisms (Kembel & Hubbell, 2006; Kress et al., 2009; Webb, 2000; Yang et al., 2014).
