During the summer, there will be thousands of new students and postdoctoral fellows joining US universities and other research institutions.
First, I want to congratulate these young scientists and welcome them to this country. I can tell you that the US is still the best place to do science despite of the worst economy in recent history. I wish all of you success in your career endeavour.
Also, I want to tell you that many scientists coming to the US encounter culture shock, and you may experience the same when you get here. For example, you may find that you will need to explain to your supervisor why you do the experiment and the rationale for all the experimental details. Keeping good records may seem to you unnecessary, particularly for the failed experiments, but are required in most laboratories.
Furthermore, you may find that your behaviors affect not only yourself, but a group of people surrounding you, or even the reputation of Chinese as a whole. you responsibility, your consideration of others, and your honesty will be recognized and appreciated. Without responsibility, working ethics and honesty, you may find it hard to survive here. Of course, it is important to learn to protect your interests in all circumstances.
Additionally, you will spend a lot of time at the beginning to learn some surviving skills: cooking, driving etc, many of the things you do not need to do back home. In your extra time, you may find a lot of ways to keep in touch with your old friends, and to make new friends. Just remember that the best way to communicate with people in your working place is to talk to them directly, or to make an appointment, not an email. If you are making a big decision, you should consult your supervisor, colleagues and friends.
Finally, I am sure that you will realize that time flies.Making best use of your time will make your efforts of studying abroad worthwhile.
