报告摘要: 1. Engineering Ethics: What Ethics Has Done to Engineering and What Engineering Is Doing to Ethics A talk in two parts. Part one will review the development of professional engineering ethics, primarily in the United States, and how this development has influenced engineering. Some modest reference will be made to other countries, along with observations on the role of analytic philosophy in engineering ethics. In complement, part two will consider a less common topic, some of the ways engineering has had and is having (or ought to have) an influence on ethics. The thesis is that ethics now must take account of living in an engineered world. |

2. Climate Change as Philosophical Problem
Begins with a non-scientist’s general summary of the scientific consensus on climate change and a review the engagement of public activist scientists concerning the proper societal response. The summary will briefly reference some epistemological and ontological problems associated with climate change research. The last half, however, will emphasize ethical and political philosophical issues. The claim is that
climate change presents an historically unprecedented challenge to us as human beings, one that we are not yet adequately addressing — and that it is increasingly unlikely we will be able to forestall global scale human disasters. The fundamental questions then become: What should we think? What should we do?
3. Key Figures in Philosophy of Technology in the West
A selective introduction to some key contributors to the development of philosophical reflection on technology in the West. Possibilities range from Ernst Kapp and Friedrich Dessauer through Ortega y Gasset and Martin Heidegger to Don Ihde, Albert Borgmann, Kristin Shrader-Frechette, and Andrew Feenberg. (The particular contributors to be considered are open to discussion and could depend to some extent on your interests.)
