some thoughts

all social science,as claimed in the title, shall serve the society. not only the physical needs of human beings shall be taken care of, but also the spiritual needs. but how different are people's spiritual needs? so hard to answer. for me, it's about knowing the beauty of the universe, enjoying the nature and the human race. for the human race part, i'd like to see people happy doing their interests. not every one is like me, but as long as they enjoy themselves and what they enjoy are healthy, even they simply get satifaction from eating. thus the ultimate goal of our efforts is to provide such kind of possibilities. as informetricians, we work for scientists and their concern comes to the first priority. I mean, when did it begin that our target custor are scientists? overlapped with scientometricians. in the very beginning, bibliometric scholars are just trying to get something out of the book statistics. imagine without citations, what is left? almost nothing. instead of webometrics, i'd prefer it as informetrics, and that's the true part that differs from traditional bibliometrics. However, it seems that web has been the territory of computer science and its brance disciplines. So we must understand the network and the computer, they form the basic element of the information era.
Undoubtedly, even scientists have to deal with their economic life,i.e. they need fundings. the government cannot do infinite investment. then they must offer something, they have to be evaluated. are government raising useless people like us ?No. we all know informetric methods are not perfect. yet what we must do is to develop and make the most of it. for comprehensive evaluation, more elements shall be added. yet, that's probably the administrator's business. to actually do something is always troublesome and sink you into trifles. but I'm in fact addicted to the models. then the question turns to how are the models useful ? are they like maps which direct you to the destination. in our real evaluation program, how much knowledge is there?
