Block-printed Hong Lou Meng* before 1870 was discovered in Pennsylvania * Hong Lou Meng, some translated as Dream in Red Mansions This passage was published in People's Political Consultative News Paper on 5th May, 2018. Photo: Historical Association of Carnegie Library in Beaver Falls, PA preserved the block-printed Hong Lou Meng before 1870, Chapter 51 1. Discovery of block-printed Hong Lou Meng in America In the recent months, I and my wife Lv Qixiang are so excited about a piece of news. For more than a decade, I have focused on the study of Chinese railway workers in USA and my wife has focused on the study and dissemination of Hong Lou Meng. Coincidently, I met Ms. Huang Qian, a volunteer of searching Chinese labors for American railway, who lives in New York at present. She has voluntarily been searching where Chinese labors have gone after finishing the Pacific rail road in 1869. When she was searching for historical data about Chinese labors in America, she found some few people noticed information that related Chinese labors to Hong Lou Meng. After several twists and turns, she finally found the collector. This is a block-printed Hong Lou Meng that came down to the cutlery factory in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, east America, a century and a half ago. Now it is in the basement of Carnegie Library, Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, preserved by America Historic Association, but few people know that. The collector preserved it carefully for the respect to Chinese labors and Chinese people but he or she didn’t know the value of the book to Chinese Culture. On 28th March 2018, Huang Qian sent me an e-mail, and said: “I searched a lot of professor Huan Annian’s blogs on the Internet. After reading your articles, I became very interested in the history about Chinese labors in America. After finishing the Pacific Railroad, how the Chinese labors in west America migrated to the east? When searching historic data, I found that besides the already known Leather Shoes Factory in Massachusetts and Laundry Factory in New Jersey, there was another factory that hired Chinese labors, which was the Cutlery Factory in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania and it hired 300 Chinese labors from 1872. In 1999, professor Lu Dekang mentioned a copy of Hong Lou Meng left by Chinese labors in his paper Asian Pioneers in the Eastern United States: Chinese Cutlery Workers in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, in the 1870s. Therefore, I tried a lot of efforts and finally contacted the Historic Association in Beaver Falls. Because they don’t understand Chinese, they have exhibited the book upside down in the glass show case. Then the Historic Association sent me the photo of the book, which reminded me of professor Huang Annian’s wife, professor Lv, who is an expert of Hong Lou Meng study. Therefore, I want to ask you and your wife for help and hope to know if there is some value from the perspective of Hong Lou Meng study. Thanks for your advice.” During this time, Huang Qian successively sent some photos of Hong Lou Meng took by the permanent History Museum (belong to the local American Historic Association) in Beaver Falls, PA. These photos include the last page and one page in the middle of chapter 51, the ridge of the book, chapter 45, and so on. Apparently, Hong Lou Meng has spread to the United States through the bottom folks one century and a half ago. In a subsequent letter, Huang Qian said that now the Beaver Falls Library knew the value of the book and decided to lock it into the safe. However, due to the bad environment of the basement, some technical guidance is needed to protect it. The Historic Association decided to display the copy only and they will send some copies to us. Although it is only partial, it also has certain value and significance. 2. Study and thinking In order to confirm the version of Hong Lou Meng that Chinese railway workers carried in the 1870s, we invited the Hong Lou Meng collector and Hong Lou Meng study expert Mr. Du Chungeng and authenticated the six photos and the other materials Huang Qian sent to us. He knew nothing about it nor involved in it before, so he did not have any preconceptions problems. One or two days later, he told us his own judgement. He compared his own collection and the photos from Huang Qian. He confirmed:” Chapter 51 is the same with what you provide, which is the version of Jiadao period, referring to page 42-43 in the index of Hong Lou Meng. This version rose from Jiadao period and has been published since then. But I cannot know which specific year it is. I just know it is the Wubentang edition from Sanrangtang publication, chapter 51 to 55.” Let’s say Jiaqing period refers to 1796-1820, and Daoguang Period refers to 1821-1850, then Jiadao period refers to 1796-1850, right before the first Pacific Railroad in America during 1863-1869. Mr. Du also wrote:” Chapter 51, page 9 back, page 10 front and back, and page 11 front from your photos are exact the same with the book. According to the Index of Hong Lou Meng, Sanrangtang publication recorded various reprints, including Sanrangtang, Tongwentang, Weiwentang, Sanyuantang, Foshanlianyuange, Hanxuanlou, Wuyunlou(1859), Wenyuantang, Zhongxintang, Jingluntang, Wubentang, Jingyuanshengji, Dengxiutang, totally 13 editions. I have most of the editions listed above and some other versions besides the listed above, but not all parts of them. They are incomplete. Lv Qixiang has the Index of Hong Lou Meng (revised edition), which was published by Shanghai Ancient Books Publishing House (1st edition, July 1981). In page 41-44, it collected the 13 versions listed above. About Wubentang version, it writes:” Hong Lou Meng with exquisite portrait and comments, Wubentang edition, 120 chapters. Title page writes: Hong Lou Meng with exquisite portrait and comments, Wubentang collection. First Weiyuan’s preface, then category, then 15 pages of exquisite portraits with front portrait and back comment. The main passage has 11 lines each page, each line with 27 or 28 words with circle points, key points, heavy circles and inter-lines comments”. We compared this with the book in Carnegie Library, Beaver Falls, PA, and found that they are completely consistent. Try to think that if it were not the workers and volunteers in Carnegie Library that carefully preserved Chinese labor’s past record, and that if it were not Huang Qian’s enthusiasm and persist in exploring the real history of Chinese railway labors migration, I am afraid we cannot see the well-preserved block-printed Hong Lou Meng that published before mid 19th century found among America folks. This block-printed piece will be still lost in the folks, or it may be lost and never found. In 1870s, Chinese labors carried Hong Lou Meng and joined the construction of Central Pacific Railroad, and then they migrated to the east, the cutlery factory in Beaver Falls, PA, which means that the influence of Hong Lou Meng in Guangdong’s overseas Chinese labors cannot be underestimated. Meanwhile, we also noticed that the economy of Beaver Falls, PA was booming and developed in modern industrialization times, while nowadays the economy development is relative slow and even somewhat sluggish. Therefore, it is far more difficult for them to preserve the Chinese historic relics in difficult times. Huang Qian also provided some donation to the museum when she heard about the protection of Hong Lou Meng. This spirit is worth promoting. This also gives us some inspiration. The spread and preservation of Hong Lou Meng in the United States was discovered by an accidental opportunity. Is this situation unique? Should we pay more attention to historical relics scattered among American or Chinese folks? Nowadays, culture and tourism often are combined into one, then I think it would be a good chance for interested tourists to go there and witness the Hong Lou Meng preserved by bottom folks for over a century and a half and to know about the historical stories of the first wave of Chinese migration moving to the east in the USA.
