English trainning course for youngster teachers ends in this week. Through the trainning, I benefit much but still feel my English is far from satisfying. English improvement is a time consuming process instead of a single leap to reach the goal.
At the end of our course, our English trainer, three very friendly and experienced teachers, also kindly provided us with some suggestions for English improvement. I'd like to share following tips with all the teachers who are trying to promote English listening, speaking and writing abilities.
Listening:
Since university, I have been listening to VOA or BBC news on www.listeningexpress.com everyday. My way is to listen to 1-2 news items again and again till I understand it wholly. If you can’t help to look at the scripts, please do that after at least three times of listening. After looking at the script, do please listen to the news again without the script.
Find some speeches by famous people, type commencements on youku.com and you may find many. Listen and listen and listen, try to understand every word, after that, retell to yourself aloud.
Writing:
Try to write a short diary everyday, recall everything you have done in mind and then write them down, look up in the dictionary when you don’t know how to express the exact word and try to remember it. Also, if you have learnt some new vocabularies and phrases, try to use them deliberately in your diary so as to strengthen memory of them.
I have kept writing English diary for about 4 to 5 years during middle school and found it very useful.
Oral:
Talk to yourself everyday before you write your diary, describing what you have done during the day and what have you felt about the day. This not only helps you try to think in English but also give a good reflection of your work. Look up in the dictionary the words you want to say but don’t know how. Write them into a memo and try to review once a day, then once a week…finally ingrains them into heart. This maybe foolish, but I do it whenever I feel like to.
Another similar way is to try to think in English when you are thinking something in heart. Translate in heart all your thoughts and use expressions you know to express them.
The most important thing about speaking is to express in the simplest way. Vocabularies do matter but only the basic and most frequently used ones are key to your oral English.
