我们先不管信件中是those还是these，也不管爱因斯坦是否用对。

Development of Western science is based on two great achievements: the invention of the formal logical system (in Euclidean geometry) by the Greek philosophers, and the discovery of the possibility to find out causal relationships by systematic experiment (during the Renaissance). In my opinion one has not to be astonished that the Chinese sages have not made those（或these） steps. The astonishing thing is that those（或these）discoveries were made at all.

第一种观点：

 “those（或these） steps”和“those（或these）discoveries”都不是指上述“two great achievements（两项重大成就）”，即形式逻辑和系统实验两项。而是指西方科学的发现。因为形式逻辑和系统实验两项只是方法基础。中国人做不到是因为中国没有这两种基础。西方人在这两种方法基础上做出了那些近代或现代科学发现，才是真正令人惊奇的。

第二种观点：

“those（或these） steps”和“those（或these）discoveries”都是指上述“two great achievements（两项重大成就）”，即形式逻辑和系统实验两项。中国人做不到是因为中国人种不行，或者其他人种如阿拉伯人也没做到，这不稀奇。而只有西方人做到了，这才是真正让人惊奇的。这体现了爱因斯坦的西方人的傲慢。

第三种观点：

 “those（或these） steps”和“those（或these）discoveries”中，“those（或these） steps”指上述“two great achievements（两项重大成就）”，即形式逻辑和系统实验两项。“those（或these）discoveries”指中国古代的科技发明和科学发现。中国人在没有形式逻辑和系统实验的情况下就能有那么辉煌的发明发现，这才是令人惊奇的呀！这种观点虽然满足了中国人的自尊和自大，但却无法解释“In my opinion one has not to be astonished that the Chinese sages have not made those（或these） steps.”
