The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) has published an article claiming that acupuncture is ineffective in treating arthritic pain.
The Australian study, Acupuncture for Chronic Knee Pain: A Randomized Clinical Trial, concluded that “…neither laser nor needle acupuncture conferred benefit…for pain or function.”
Uproar ensued amongst America’s TCM community and several prominent practitioners have written to the journal, calling the study’s methods and conclusions into question.
One letter from David Baxter and Steve Tumilty pointed out that the study used lower dosages than are deemed necessary to have any effect, whilst Lixing Lao and Dr Wing-Fai Yeung noted that the subjects were tested at an interval of 12 weeks and one year after treatment; however, for acupuncture to be effective, treatment must occur at regular intervals, suggesting that findings after a year are invalid.
Eight scholars from five different countries wrote letters to challenge the findings on Chinese New Year’s Eve.
