环境工作组（Environmental Working Group, EWG）的科学家分析了2010年至2017年美国48000多个社区供水系统自来水中的污染物。他们在全国范围内的饮用水中发现了22种致癌污染物，包括砷、消毒副产品以及铀和镭等放射性污染物，研究人员估计，在平均寿命（约70年）内，这些污染物可能导致100,000例癌症。
