其原因是“on his way to a Halloween party, was mistakenly dropped off at the wrong house.或He was on his way to a Halloween party and went to the wrong house by mistake.（在去万圣节聚会的路上，他误入别人家的房子。）”

张宏著《闲聊英语》中《93. 聊聊美国的粗俗英语》将此事归结为日本留学生不理解美国土话所致。该书这样描述：1992年一个日本留学生Hattori Yoshihiro误入Louisiana州Baton Rouge市区的美国人院子，美国人喊“Freeze!（当地俚语，“站住！”，相当于“Stop!”）”。日本学生没听懂，继续往里走，结果被美国人开枪打死。
