科学家声称，疱疹病毒可能与至少一半的阿尔茨海默病病例有关。
Ruth Itzhaki教授在曼彻斯特大学工作了25年多，他研究了这两者之间的潜在联系。他说，在台湾进行的研究表明，感染单纯疱疹病毒（herpes simplex virus，HSV）的人患痴呆的风险要大得多。
有两种类型的单纯疱疹病毒（HSV）：HSV1，也称为口腔疱疹，在口腔周围和面部引起冷疮和水疱；HSV2，一般负责生殖器疱疹。
Itzhaki教授说：“引人注目的结果包括有证据表明，感染HSV的人患老年痴呆的风险更大，并且抗疱疹抗病毒治疗导致严重感染HSV1的人中随后发展为痴呆的人数急剧减少。
“HSV1可占阿尔茨海默病病例的50%或更多。”
