There are always assumptions, both stated and unstated, behind any theorem. Bell’s proof uses fairly simple mathematics and seems to assume nothing that we all don’t already accept as true. But desperate problems inspire desperate measures. Quantum theorists have searched for alternatives to the Copenhagen Interpretation by examining some of those unstated-yet-accepted assumptions—things that we rarely question, because most of us can not imagine that they’re nottrue.

While the Copenhagen Interpretation still rules implacably, embracing these two oddities with aplomb, the nagging dissatisfaction they cause will continue to motivate new generations of physicists to search for an alternative.
