1755年，Samuel Johnson在给《A Dictionary of the English Language（英语语言词典）》的序言中提出的原则“被解释的词语不能比释义词深奥”，“简单的词语是无法释义的（simple ideas cannot be described）” To explain, requires the use of terms less abstruse than that which is to be explained, and such terms cannot always be found; for as nothing can be proved but by supposing something intuitively known, and evident without proof, so nothing can be defined but by the use of words too plain to admit a definition.

1935年，英语语言教师Michael West 和James Endicott编纂了世界上第一部使用释义词汇的词典《New Method English Dictionary（新方法英语词典）》，仅使用了1490个释义词。1953年，Michael West发表了2000个词的通用释义词表（General Service List，GSL）。1978年首次出版的《Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English（朗文当代英语词典）》，使用了Michael Weat创立的2000词的通用释义词表，对所有单词进行释义。 Michael West这位神奇的教师做了一系列的实验，认为在阅读前给一些问题然后进行搜索式阅读的效果非常好，作为他的博士论文。而后提出了分阶段阅读法，1933年左右还统计了在会话课上师生的说话比例。1934-1935年又认识到口语词表的重要性。1953年，在500万词次语料库上统计出，给出了每个义项的出现概率，学习难度系数，学习必要性，覆盖度，风格层次（高低），是否情感词。由此看来，汉语的词语释义研究远远落后于英语。
