自十九世纪中叶开始,近代地貌学在西方获得了长足的发展。”Geomorphology”用三个希腊文合成、即:geo(地球)、morph(形态)、logos(研究)。该词最早出现于德国Laumann(1858)的著作中。Keith Tinkler认为: “Geomorphology”一词在英语、德语和法语中普遍运用是在两个学者(J.W. Powell与 W. J. McGee)于1991年国际地质大会[注1]上使用了该词以后。
