Discussion Chairman: Byron Hayes
Date and Time: Tuesday, November 11th, 2014 - 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Location: Sheraton New Orleans; New Orleans, LA
Event Name: November 2014 Committee Week
This special effort was initiated to begin the generation of a
series of documents that would address the standardization needs of this new and developing technology. The current vision for absorbable metals standardization includes an ISO umbrella document that would then link to a total of four separate documents that are intended to cover the Materials, in vitro Degradation, and Biological Evaluation aspects of absorbable metals - many of which are likely to become new ASTM Work Items.
This collection of documents is the result of a nearly one year collaborative effort between ASTM, ISO, NACE, and the Biodegradable Metals Symposium, an organization devoted to forwarding this technology. This inter-organizational collaboration has been hosted primarily by ASTM through a combination of a special four hour working session that was held at our F04 meeting in Toronto and the ongoing document development capability made possible through ASTM AC87 Administrative Collaboration Area entitled "Standardization Strategy for Absorbable
Metals." Additional document development discussions were held at
August's Biodegradable Metals Symposium and at September's ISO
TC150/SC1/WG4 meeting. The discussion at Tuesday's session in New Orleans will cover the current drafts of these documents as well as their projected
future development both inside and outside of ASTM.
