Ronald Mahler 是谁？

我个人4月26号发了一篇博文《一个超级大牛的超级自引文献----这才叫牛：引的响当当》，引起了大家对Ronald Mahler和大牛的讨论高潮。包括何毓琦老师《也谈 “一篇超级大牛的超级自引文献----这才叫牛：引的响当当”》，吴宝俊老师《【科●反】躺着中枪的Ronald Mahler与科研名利场 》以及谢力老师《何为大牛：关于Ronald Mahler》等等分别撰写了博文，也都被编辑部精选。所以跟贴讨论和评价的也很多。我最早发文的初衷以及对大家给予的意见和知识反馈的理解和感激在我的博文《 给“超级大牛”Ronald Mahler 再补一枪？》& 《翻译兼回复: “Why I wrote the article 也谈"一篇超级大牛的…"》中表述比较清楚。
这里介绍Ronald Mahler的主要研究工作，尽量不发表个人观点。因这个人公开的信息很少(可能跟他不是一般的在大学任职有关吧，没有找到其个人网站之类的东西；再者跟他的研究单位Martin多目标跟踪更多是军事项目涉密有关?)，所以数据主要是他的发表文献搜集Publications以及他本人自述的一些东西（来自他的研究报告PPT和书籍）
一，Ronald Mahler 简述 (全名 Ronald P. S. Mahler)
谢力老师《何为大牛：关于Ronald Mahler》博文已经进行了部分Ronald Mahler 教育情况的简述和分析，其可能来源于在Mahler发表在IEEE T. Aerospace & Electronics Systems 最后的作者简述。这里面还有一段话如下:
Dr. Mahler is the author, coauthor, or coeditor of over fifty publications, including eleven articles in refereed journals, two books, a hardcover conference proceedings, and a monograph. He has been invited to present at many universities, U.S. government laboratories, and conferences including Harvard, Johns Hopkins, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Massachusetts, the Air Force Institute of Technology, SPAWAR Systems Center, the IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, the International Conference on Information, Decision, and Control, and the International Conference on Information Fusion.
上面提到他写的两个著作: 一个是《Statistical Multisource Multitarget Information Fusion》, Artech House 2007 出版，他是唯一作者。（下面简称书S）。另外一本不知道说的是：1997年和人合著《Mathematics of Data Fusion》CRC Press，和《Random sets: theory and applications》Springer ，他都是第二作者；2000年自己单独出版《An Introduction to Multisource-multitarget Statistics and Applications》（很短104页，更像手册），Lockheed Martin。其中，集他2007年之前基本理论大成的书S中序言中清楚得写到：
The purpose of this book is not to reprise what has already been adequately addressed. Rather, it is a textbook style introduction to a fundamentally new, seamlessly unied, and fully statistical approach to information fusion.
（翻译，这本书不对已经得到充分解决的问题进行陈述（这段话之前列出了基本领域内经典的书籍）。相反，它是一本能够给信息融合提供一套全新的系统完整的纯粹统计方法）
从理论方法上理解，他的研究工作都是建立在FISST（finite set statistics）上。注意，Set Statistics是传统数学里面的东西，但现在很多的研究者公认FISST是Mahler的东西了。这一套理论上发展用于多目标跟踪（Multiple target tracking）的 PHD filter， CPHD filter，以及 Multi-target Multi-Bernoulli filter, “Second-generation” PHD/CPHD filters 等等。他怎么起源的自己的研究呐？在书S中他介绍到：
I acknowledge my profound debt to the groundbreaking research of Dr. I.R. Goodman of the U.S. Navy SPAWAR Systems Center. It was Dr. Goodman who, beginning in late 1993, exposed me to the potentially revolutionary implications of random set techniques in information fusion.
