从建校起，历经近8个世纪的洗礼，萨拉曼卡大学一直是欧洲的重要学术中心之一，与巴黎大学（法国）、牛津大学（英国）和博洛尼亚大学（意大利）齐名，并称欧洲四大名校，西班牙人引为骄傲。萨拉曼卡大学是西班牙最古老的顶尖公立大学，也是世界上历史最悠久的几所高等学府之一。萨拉曼卡大学以人文社会科学见长，在自然科学等其他领域实力亦不可小觑。公元1218年，莱昂王国国王阿方索九世下令建立萨拉曼卡大学；公元1255年，由阿方索十世国王和罗马教皇亚历山大四世联合授予萨拉曼卡大学大学印章。萨拉曼卡大学建校以来，受到以罗马教廷为首的欧洲上层阶层的大力支持，建立了以神学、法学、人文学、文学、语言学为主体的综合性大学教育体制。从中诞生了无数的学者、文人和政治家，文艺复兴时期著名的萨拉曼卡学派即肇始于此。围绕萨拉曼卡大学发展起来的萨拉曼卡古城是卡斯蒂利亚文化和西班牙语的起源地，1988年被联合国授予世界文化遗产称号。

萨拉曼卡大学是素有“欧洲常春藤联盟”之称的科英布拉集团三所西班牙大学成员之一，在世界范围内享有盛誉，她既是西班牙高等院校的典范，又是拉丁美洲地区早期大学的楷模，已经与其他世界名校建立了稳固的交流、合作机制，每年吸引着众多国际学子来此求学。
